2. Kolkata — The Historic Giant
Kolkata's is the oldest tea auction in India and the second-oldest in the world, running continuously since 1861. It handles premium Darjeelings and high-quality Assam orthodox teas, and remains the trade's traditional benchmark market.

3. Guwahati (Assam) — The World's Largest CTC Market
Established in 1970, Guwahati is where the heavy-bodied Assam liquor comes from — and it's not just India's biggest CTC auction, it's the largest CTC tea auction centre in the world by volume. This is the engine room of everyday "kadak chai" tea.
- Best for: Strong, malty CTC tea with a deep reddish colour.
- Why buy here: Ideal for the strong, milk-forward "kadak chai" style popular across Maharashtra and Gujarat, and for buyers who need volume above all else.
4. Coonoor, Coimbatore & Cochin — The Overlooked Southern Market
Most sourcing guides stop at West Bengal and Assam, but South India runs its own significant auction system across three centres — Coonoor and Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu's Nilgiris district, and Cochin (Kochi) in Kerala. Together they handle tea from a completely different growing region, with its own flavour profile: Nilgiris tea is typically brighter, more fragrant, and quicker-brewing than the heavier Assam or Dooars leaf.
- Best for: South Indian CTC and orthodox grades, tea suited to iced/cold-brew formats, and export blends where a lighter, brisk character is wanted.
- Why buy here: If you're building a product for South Indian markets, or an export/iced-tea line where a heavier Assam base isn't the right fit, this region is worth sourcing from directly rather than substituting a North Indian grade that doesn't quite match.
5. Jalpaiguri — The Smaller Regional Player
The North Bengal Tea Auction Committee has run the Jalpaiguri auction since 2005. It's smaller in volume than Siliguri or Kolkata, but it's a useful secondary market if you're already sourcing from North Bengal and want to compare rates or pick up smaller regional lots.
